The Promise of anAbundant Life

A new year brings new beginnings, hope, and anticipation. For many, that looks like resolutions, vision boards, and bucket lists - an eagerness for all that is to come.

Yet for others, a new year feels heavy. It carries the weight of broken promises, unmet dreams, and the nagging feeling of being “behind.” It’s the sense that life is passing you by while everyone else appears more successful, more prepared, or further along.

If you struggle with the heaviness of the new year, I want to offer you a different perspective, one that leads back to the abundance meant for you.

One of my favorite scriptures is John 10:10: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Years ago, I struggled to see what God had for me. I was consumed by the lives of those around me—friends and family who seemed to be chasing dreams, traveling the world, and climbing ladders of purpose. I got caught up in feelings of "less than" and "lack." The more I ruminated on those thoughts, the harder life felt. I stopped showing up for my own life because I was too busy mourning the one I didn't have.

Then, God revealed what I was failing to see. I was sitting in my parked car outside of a church, about to attend a funeral, when I glanced at the dashboard. The clock read 10:10. This was a number that had been appearing everywhere for weeks. Still new in my faith, I pulled out my phone and searched for "10:10 Bible verses." John 10:10 leaped off the screen.

In that moment, I realized the truth: When we look at our lives through the lens of others, it steals, kills, and destroys our peace. The "thief" wants you to feel behind. He wants you defeated, stuck, and blind to what you have already achieved. He wants you to dwell on the gap so that you stop taking steps forward.

The Message translation puts it this way: “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”

Our eternal life will be more beautiful than we can imagine, but if we aren't careful in the here and now, we will miss the abundance intended for us on this side of heaven.

I didn't need to feel behind. I was right where I was meant to be. And you are too!

The new year is a time for new beginnings. Take some time to reflect and journal and see your life through HIs eyes.

Reflection & Journaling Questions

Identifying the Thief

In what specific area (career, family, spiritual growth) do you feel most "behind"? Is this feeling based on God’s timing or a timeline you've observed on social media?

Defining Abundance

John 10:10 speaks of "life to the full." What does a "full life" look like for you right now if you take away your achievements or your "to-do" list?

Surrendering the Calendar

If you knew for certain that God’s plan for you would be fulfilled regardless of the date on the calendar, how would your stress levels change today?

Trusting the Hidden Work

What is one "small win" or area of growth from the past year that no one else saw, but you know the Lord was working on?

I’d love to hear from you

A closing prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the gift of a new year. Help us to see the blessings in our lives and to trust the plans you have for us. Open our eyes so that we do not let the thief steal our hope and purpose. May we see with eyes wide open the abundant life you have for us, even in the messy parts that look nothing like we envisioned. As this new year unfolds, let us use our days for good. Let us use the time you have given us on blessing others and living the lives we have in ways that are pleasing to you. In your name we pray, Amen.
